JOB DESCRIPTION:
JOB TITLE: Cook
POSITION REPORTS TO: Kitchen Manager
DEPARTMENT: CHCS Senior Centers
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
Primary Purpose of Job
The primary purpose of the position is to assist with food preparation and meal service at a CHCS senior community center.
Essential Job Functions
· Assist with preparation including, but not limited to, measuring and weighing ingredients, washing and cleaning fruits and vegetables, chopping, cutting and slicing food, and cooking specific items as identified by the kitchen manager.
· Prepare simple dishes independently, as directed by the kitchen manager or center manager.
· Serve food and provide assistance to participants as needed.
· Clean prep, cooking, and serving areas, equipment, dishes, utensils, etc.
· Assist with receiving food deliveries and supplies.
· Monitor temperatures and compliance with other food safety standards.
· Provide input for menu planning.
· Assist in maintaining inventory of kitchen supplies.
Other Job Functions
· Responsible to be knowledgeable and to implement the Mission and Philosophy of the Archdiocese and organization within the scope of responsibility.
· Adheres to established policies and procedures for Catholic Human Services at all times.
· Treat all consumers/clients/participants, staff, volunteers, visitors, and community partners with dignity and respect.
· Demonstrate high standards of attendance and timeliness.
· Attend meetings, trainings, and events, as needed/assigned, to facilitate communication, collaboration, and overall quality of service.
· Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Education
· Minimum of a High School Diploma, or equivalent.
Experience/Abilities
· Experience in food service and ability to follow safe food handling practices. ServSafe certification preferred.
- Is flexible, hospitable, able to work independently and to follow directions consistently.
- Ability to follow recipes.
Physical Requirements (with or without the aid of mechanical devices)
· Sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently during work hours.
· Must be able to lift, push, pull and move equipment, supplies, etc. up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment
· Kitchen – must be comfortable using equipment and appliances, and with exposure to associated risks (e.g., heat, cooking odors, etc.)
· Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work respectfully and effectively with participants, personnel, other agencies, community partners, vendors, and center visitors under a variety of circumstances and conditions.
· Must be able to work effectively with older adults in a community setting, respectful of their dignity and right to self-determination.
· Is subject to frequent interruptions.
Language
- For some Centers, fluency in languages in addition to English may be required or preferred.
