8th Grade Homeroom Teacher and English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher

Position Summary

The 8th Grade Homeroom and English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher is responsible for creating a faith-filled, academically rigorous, and nurturing classroom environment that supports the spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development of students. The teacher serves as the primary homeroom teacher for eighth-grade students while providing high-quality instruction aligned with diocesan curriculum standards and the mission of Catholic education.

Primary Responsibilities

Catholic Identity

  • Support and promote the mission, philosophy, and teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Model Christian values through words and actions.
  • Foster a classroom environment rooted in respect, compassion, service, and Catholic traditions.
  • Participate in school liturgies, prayer services, retreats, and other faith-based activities.
  • Integrate Catholic values and Gospel teachings into daily instruction whenever appropriate.

Instructional Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging English Language Arts instruction aligned with diocesan and state standards.
  • Teach reading comprehension, literature, vocabulary, grammar, writing, speaking, listening, and research skills.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and technology to enhance student learning.
  • Assess student learning using formative and summative assessments.
  • Maintain accurate grades and provide timely feedback on student performance.
  • Prepare students for high school through rigorous academic expectations and strong organizational skills.

Homeroom Responsibilities

  • Create a welcoming, safe, and respectful classroom community.
  • Take daily attendance and maintain accurate student records.
  • Supervise students during homeroom and assigned duties.
  • Monitor students' academic progress, behavior, attendance, and overall well-being.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for parents regarding student concerns.
  • Coordinate homeroom activities, school events, assemblies, and special programs.
  • Support students during the high school application process as assigned.

Classroom Management

  • Establish clear classroom expectations and routines.
  • Maintain a positive learning environment that encourages responsibility and respect.
  • Implement school-wide discipline policies consistently and fairly.
  • Promote restorative practices and positive behavior supports.

Communication

  • Maintain regular communication with parents regarding academic progress, behavior, and classroom activities.
  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences.
  • Collaborate effectively with administrators, faculty, support staff, and families.
  • Respond to parent and administrator communications in a timely and professional manner.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Attend faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and diocesan in-service programs.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in curriculum planning and school improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, and school matters.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in appearance, communication, and conduct.
  • Continue professional growth through ongoing learning opportunities.

 

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, English, or a related field.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Catholic education.
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and parents.
